The film started of what I thought was a documentary on why you should or should not visit Thailand...then the movie changed to a mystic adventure , beautiful shots of the tropical Forrest in Thailand , mystic animals spirits make it almost a children's story

Mom has moved into her new apartment, bought a three prong converter thingy for her electrical outlet, set up her DVD player and is watching movies again. She has watched another pair, let's find which she preferred, shall we?

This time around she watched Mysterious Skin (22) vs Downfall (43).

Jango FettDid you notice that the last Star Wars did not break into the top 64. Well, neither did I. After all, who cares about it. But wait, this is STAR WARS we are talking about. George Lucas has the best special effects in the world, the characters are probably the most recognized in all of movies, and he had a legion of devoted fans. All he had to do was to make a movie that kind of people liked.

But the critics did like it! I guess when it came down to it they did not like it enough to put it on their top ten lists. It only got mentioned on seven top 10 lists and ended up 73 in the rankings.

When I saw Episode One, there was a woman in the theater that sighed "Finally!!" when the opening credits started to roll. I suspect by the end of that movie she was incredibly disappointed. I wonder what she thinks about Episode Three. I wonder if she has even seen it.

Mom has been busy packing up for a move to a new apartment, so this pick was slow in coming. Next week she will be moving so that pick might take a while too.

The pairing this time around was Kings and Queen (15) vs Millions (50).

Winner: Millions

Mom says,"saw Millions (50) last night loved it..... score is a 5....After the money fell from the sky and the little boy would ask neighbors 'are you poor ?' and the person would explain what was missing in their flat/ home

"... how great was that...? when was the last time you heard that....? the flick was a winner."

and

Mom did not give a score to Kings and Queen.

Kings and Queen (15) was ranked #1 in six different top 10 lists, an impressive feat, but this was no help. Kings and Queen even had Catherine Deneuve, but that was no help either. Millions was just too fun for Mom to resist.

I think only three people guessed this one right. Todd is on a roll! VAsko is still beating Bill. Bill hates that.

Jesus Saves, David Shaves!Boing Boing is starting a protest against a product called SmartFilter because SmartFitler flagged Boing Boing as a nudity site, thus censoring the site for users in coutries like Iran, UAE, and Qatar. So, I figured I would jump on the bandwagon and post some rockin' genitalia here.

For the dudes who only like to look at their own penises. Boobs! Oh, sorry about that bonus penis.

Another Collection of Top 10 Lists

I stumbled on another site, CriticsTop10.net, that collects all the top ten lists and creates one big list. The movies are scored slightly differently on this list. They just give one point per movie no matter what the placement on the top 10 list.

The list used to create the brackets is from Movie City News and they score the movies by the position in the top 10 lists, #1 gets 10 points and #10 gets 1 point.

With the two scoring systems, there are some slight differences in the two lists. I do not know which scoring system is better. However, Critics Top 10 does have some interesting sub-listings such at 'Passion Index', 'Cream of the Crop Critics', 'Oscar Best Picture Contenders', 'Number of #1 Mentions out of 640 Lists', 'Foriegn Language' and 'Documentary'.

Werner Herzog, the director of Grizzly Man, is everywhere and all powerful.

After seeing Werner Herzog eat his shoe, I figured he was the coolest director alive. Recent events have confirmed this.

First, Herzog helps Joaquin Phoenix from a car wreck:
"Phoenix was saved because he was wearing his seatbelt, but has revealed he was helped from the wreckage by the 63-year-old, who has a home nearby.

Then, he gets shot with an air rifle, but continues with the interview saying "It was not a significant bullet. I am not afraid.". Video Link

Digging around I found that Ian Curtis, singer of Joy Division, commited suicide after watching one of his movies, Stroszek. Ok, that is not cool, but still... Let's call it 'just nuts'.

I tried to explain the ending of Stroszek to one of my friends and after 5 minutes of me rambling, she said, "Sounds weird". I said, "Yeah".

I guess Ian Curtis found it even more weird than I did.

"Ian Curtis, lead singer of the band Joy Division, reportedly committed suicide a few hours after watching the Stroszek on BBC 2 on May 18, 1980. The original vinyl release version of Joy Division's posthumous album Still featured the following groove notation: "The chicken won't stop" (side A), etched chicken tracks across the grooves (sides B & C), and "The chicken stops here" (side D). Yeah, so Stroszek is real powerful and stuff. This is due in large part because of the actor Bruno S. Bruno S was in another movie by Werner Herzog called The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser. This might be Werner Herzog's best movie. Watch it, you will be freaked out you did.

Yeah, I am in love with Werner Herzog. For Werner Herzog, I would switch teams. There has to be someone in this world you would switch teams for, right? Right?

I am hosting a game where people will predict my mom's favorite movie of 2005. The game is a bracket tournament like March Madness. My mom will watch the top 64 movies of 2005, and who ever scores the most points will win a copy of my Mom's favorite movie of 2005.

Mom was able to get a bit of a headstart before the prediction deadline passed, so the results are already in for Game 7. Mom watched Me and You and Everyone We Know(25) vs Kung Fu Hustle(40) .

The Prediction deadline has past, Mom has watched her first pairing and has made her first decision. Game 5, Last Days (21) vs Look at Me (45). ...and the winner is ......Look at Me! Our first upset even!

Below is what Mom had to say about the movies. Mom used to write telegrams for a living. She recently retired, but her love of the style carries on in her emails.

I mistakenly had the deadline set to midnight 2/12. This made it so any prediction that came in on 2/12 appeared to be late. I corrected the deadline to midnight 2/13, so these predictions are now on time.

In other words, you can predict on Sunday, but Monday will be too late to be eligible for the prize.

5. You can not 'back fill' your predictions (sorry). Just predict a few, click update, predict a few more, rinse, repeat.
6. The deadline for predictions that are eligible for the DVD is 2/12/2006. Act now!!
